Pruning your trees is a vital part of tree care. It keeps your trees looking great and growing properly. Pruning is often used to remove diseased, decaying, or non-productive portions of a plant. It is also done for safety reasons.
When you’re a pruning a tree, you should look for these braches to remove:
Limbs that are dead, broken, or crossing
Limbs that have grown outside the outline
of the tree’s crown
Limbs that bend inward
Competing main stems
Large, sharp, V-shaped branches
Root suckers and watersprouts
Also, as you prune a tree, you should follow these guidelines:
Do not leave branch stubs
Keep low branches short
Make cuts just outside the branch collar
Pruning a large limb can be dangerous if done incorrectly.
Follow these quick steps to safely prune large limbs:
Make a cut on the bottom of the branch half way through 12–24” from the branch collar
Then, make a second cut on the top of the branch until it reaches the first cut
Once then limb falls off, cut the remaining part of the branch just outside the branch collar
