Trees come with great benefits. They can provide shade in the summer time, make your yard look great, increase your property value, and even provide food. However, if you do not take proper caution when installing a tree, they can cause problems. Fortunately, Landscape Direct has gathered some simple guidelines to make your tree experience hassle free!
When you plant trees, be aware of buried utility lines and the serious risks they can pose. When choosing a site, locate all underground electric, gas, water, sewer, cable and telephone lines. Dial 811 before any digging project to get your utility lines marked for free.
Plant large trees at least 20 feet away from power lines
Smaller trees can be moved closer to power lines, about 5 feet away
Allot 60 square feet (roughly 8’ x 8’) of growing space for small trees and 180 square feet (roughly 13’ x 13’) of growing space for large trees
Do not plant trees too close to roads, driveways, or sidewalks and avoid blocking traffic signs
Do not plant trees too close to AC units, utility transformers, or you house
Be considerate of your neighbors by avoiding planting trees too close to their houses, garden, and plants, or blocking their views (except for cases when you are using trees for privacy purposes)
Choose a shovel that is lightweight and the right length for you. When using a shovel, you should be able to maintain proper posture as well as keep your wrists straight.
